about
An adaptation of Isabelle Thompson's "I Am Half Sick of Shadows."
lyrics
I sit down on my bedroom floor
and, in my mirror, watch my
window where grey tree trunks
are swirling hard and the crows
with wings as splayed as fingers
land on lichen-covered roofs.
I always close my bedroom door
and live as quiet as a spy:
I only want the world when shrunk
to a square that never grows
and never moves, but lingers
on a tiny pane of truth.
Nowadays my weaving's done with words:
I write the life I do not lead,
I write it on my laptop screen -
my world's a world of rectangles
and realities reflected.
I do not dare incur the curse.
But I am not a cage-bred bird -
I cannot sing if I'm not freed;
watching shadows shadows me:
these panes of glass can strangle.
It's not life but life deflected
that brings me closer to the hearse.
